1. Walker Evans Coffee house in Selma, Alabama 1935.
2.This picture takes place outside of a building. As you can see the picture is kind of faded so I believe that it was probably taken during the middle of the day. This building looks to be located in a rural area.
3.This picture has no people in it but it does have a bicycle on the front porch.
4.believe that this is a coffee shop by the title of the picture. The building looks to be in good condition but it is missing a couple windows in the front. In the picture it looks like there is no spaces between this building and the next one. Next to the structure it looks like there is a saloon or a shop.
5.To me the coffee house looks positive and light, because there is a bike outside the coffee house and the building is in good shape. Also the place does not look abandoned it just looks quiet.
6. This picture to me overall looks like a nice place to visit and I would like to go there. Even though there are a couple broken windows the shop does not look run-down or out of business. The Buildings do look a little cramped next to each other though in the picture. This picture looks pretty positive and there doesn't seem to be anything negative about it.

1. Jack Delano took this picture May 1941 and it is a picture Birdhouse and landscape at an old plantation home near Eutaw, Alabama.
2. This picture was taken outside. It was taken during the middle of the day so as you can see it was light outside. This is a very rural area, because in the picture it seems like you can see flat land and trees for miles.
3. There are no people in my picture.
4. This is neither a home or a business, it is a picture of a tree house on a tree trunk. The tiny house on top of the tree trunk seems to be in very good condition, but I can't see it very well. This tree house has two benches, a chair and a couple trees near by but that is all.
5. The tone of this picture to me seems negative and dark. To me the picture looks negative, because it is a picture taken of a plantation where slaves used to work and the chairs are probably where the plantation owners sat and watched over the land as the slaves worked.
6. This picture is of a sitting area that looks over an abandoned plantation. This picture makes me feel very said because this is where plantation owners stood watching their poor works stand all day in the sun working. The picture also interests me,because there is a random house on top of a tree trunk. I would reallly like to know why its there.

1. This picture was taken by Jack Delano and it is a church the African American.
2. As you can see this picture was taken outdoors in a rural area. In the picture it looks to be the middle of the day.
3. There are no people in this picture.
4. This is a picture of a church that is not in good condition it looks like it is goin to tip over. There are not any buildings or homes surrounding the church.
5. The lighting in the seems to pretty dull and depressing. To me this is a negative picture.
6. This church is for African Americans only, because African Americans were not allowed in Caucasion churches. To me i thinbk it is really depressing that African Americans had to make their own churches, because they were not allowed in other churches even if they followed the same religion. Their church is not even in that great condition.

Was Jack Delano African Americn? Shelby H. Picture (3)
Picture #1- Thomas B.
1) This photograph is shot by Walker Evans during December of 1935. It is taken in Selvin, Alabama.
2) The photograph depicts a setting of an outdoors, run-down street in Selvin, Alabama. This scene has an area of bright lighting where the people are, thus it is day, and dark shadows covering the foreground. This picture represents an urban scene, as detailed by the car and brick building. It can be assumed that it is about mid-afternoon, as shown by the angle of the shadows produced by the buildings.
3) This photograph shows five men, all of black skin color, with four sitting on benches and one walking by. The people look to be of a wide range of ages, perhaps from their twenties to their forties. They appear to be wearing old suits and dark-colored pants, and they all contain similarly fashioned hats except for the man walking by. My eye is immediately attracted to the hopelessness of their manner and their tired, gloomy expressions. A distinguishing feature evident in the picture is the slouched over position of the man by himself on the far left.
4) The structures in the photograph appear to be run-down shops, and there are no houses in the picture. They look old and relatively deserted, as well as in a very poor condition that is shown by the cracks in the bricks and faded writing on the signs. There is no spacing between the shop buildings and they are surrounded by the sidewalks and cars typical of an urban setting. 5)The tone of this photograph is heavy and negative. A sense of gloom and despair that protrudes from the disorderly array of buildings and lost expressions of the people transcends the materialness of the photograph. The darkness of the photograph is equally evident from the angle of the shadows; the shadows have not reached the people in the photograph yet, but there is an aura of inevitability about the coming hardships. 6)My response to the photograph is one of misery and forlorn. The tattered signs, scattered cloths, and cracked bricks give the photograph a sense that any prosperity and happiness that once resided in Selvin, Alabama has vanished and left to bear the misfortunes of the town are the poor citizens sitting on the benches. Their expressions are beyond anger and sadness and instead display an acceptance of the grief that they have come to bear. The fact that there are no gaping spaces in between the buildings only adds to the sense of unhappiness because it symbolizes that the depression affects everyone. In summation, my response to the photograph is one of lost hope, but also a helplessness created by the sheer inability to solve the problems that the people faced. 7)If I could ask the photographer a question, I would ask, “What inspired you to choose this street scene over any other street in Selvin?” If I could ask the subjects of the photograph a question, I would ask, “What troubles you at this moment in time, and is there any way you can conquer your problems?” Picture #2- Thomas B. 1)This photograph is taken by Jack Delano during May of 1941. It is taken at a farm near Greensborough, North Carolina. 2)This photograph portrays an outdoor scene with very minimal light shining on the area that the picture was taken. It is a rural setting, as evidenced by its location of at a farm stated in the title, and there is no distinguishing evidence of the time of day. 3)In this photograph, there are three people. The photograph contains two children, looking to be in their early teens, and one older lady who may be the children’s mother. All three people are wearing ragged, torn clothing of very plain colors and with large stains. A distinguishing feature of the people is the blank, solemn expression on their faces and the boy leaning on the wooden pillar catches my eye first. 4)In the background of the picture, there appears to be a wooden house in a somewhat poor condition. There are no other structures in the field of view. 5)The tone of the photograph appears to be heavy as there is an unmistakable seriousness in the expression of the people and the worried looks on their phases. The tone is also negative due to the horrific conditions of their clothes and a sense of very little happiness created by the lack of material possessions in the picture. It is certainly dark as the people appear almost in a state of grief. 6)After observing this photograph, my response is not a positive one. I feel saddened by the condition of the people’s clothes, indicating that they have a tough life working on the farm. Here are three hardworking people of North Carolina and they can barely scrape by on an existence with few pleasures. The house behind them looks hardly inviting with its dull wooden structure and old, dirty floor boards. I am also disheartened by the people’s worried expressions, probably resulting from the uncertainty that the future may hold. A particularly distinguishing feature that grabs my attention is the posture and demeanor of the boy in the center of the picture. He looks to be the youngest in the picture and, as he clutches the wooden structure, he seems to be wondering, “Is this really all that life offers?” This photograph is an unhappy reminder of the opportunities lost in an era of very little to smile about. 7) If I could ask the photographer a question, I would ask, “What caused you to photograph the people in the position that they are in with nothing to truly catch the viewer’s eye?” I would ask the subjects of the photograph, “How does the time period of the Great Depression affect your lives as they were before its occurrence?” Picture #3- Thomas B. 1)This photograph is taken by Jack Delano during May of 1941. It is taken at a farm near Greensborough, North Carolina. 2)This photograph depicts an outdoor setting of a bright day. It is certainly a rural area as shown by the farms in the background. It is probably around midday. 3)There are two people in this photograph, both of whom appear to be in their thirties or forties. There clothing is plain and dirty from working on the farm. A distinguishing feature that catches my eye is the position of the box on top of the women’s head. 4)There is one structure in the photograph, a wooden cart for carrying farm materials or crops. It looks to be in a poor condition due to the unevenness of the front and back wheels. The structure is surrounded by open fields. 5)The tone of the photograph appears to be fairly heavy because of the hard labor the farmers are completing for what looks like very little gain. The picture seems to not have a very strong positive or negative correlation, but it appear dark because the farmers are not simply enjoying themselves but rather dealing with the serious matter of trying to make a living. 6)In response to this photograph, I feel sorrow. The hardships of trying to make a meager living by farming during the Great Depression seems like such a monumental task that it pains my hart to see these two farmers appearing in a mannerism that suggests that they have little pleasure in their lives. The African-American farmers in this era as whole suffered through difficult years of merely trying to survive and live their life with what little pleasures they had, constantly having to worry about themselves and their family’s well being. Their plain clothing and lack of shoes symbolizes the lack of material possessions for farmers of the era. 7)Question to Photographer: “What caused you take this photograph with the box above the woman’s head?” Question to Subjects: “What crops do you grow on your farm?”
Picture #1 - Taylor B. 1. This photograph was taken by Jack Delano in May of 1941, in Greensboro, Alabama.
2. This photograph shows a slave sitting within her house on the farm that she works. It seems dark in the room that the picture is shot in, it might be late-afternoon or in the evening. I do believe that this picture was taken on a farm, so I would conclude that the area is rural and very country-like.
3. This photo was shot of one person, and older woman, a slave. She looks as if she might be in her 70s. This a black and white photo so there is not much color. I would also say that the pictures in the background do not have much color either because there were only black and white cameras. The clothing the woman wears seems very old and raggedy. As a slave she is not provided with nice clothes, so her clothes are torn and tattered. When looking at the picture I first noticed the woman's expression, it helps to imagine what she's thinking.
4. From the title of the photograph, I would say that this picture was taken in a home. The house seems to be very crowded and full of pictures.
5. This picture seems heavy and negative. And the picture as a whole is quite dark.
6. As I looked at this picture, it made me wonder what it was like to be a slave. I can see the pain in the woman's expression. Her wrinkles in her face show strength, wisdom, and age. The picture is titled "Old ex-slave on farm in Greensboro, Alabama", so I can tell that this woman was a slave for a majority of her life. As an older woman she's been through a lot. In this picture the woman looks like she's sittin in her old home and remeniscing on the days that she worked the farms.
7. subject of the picture - What are the pictures in the back taken of? photographer - What made you decide to take a picture of this woman?
Picture #2- Taylor B. 1. This photograph was shot by Jack Delano during May of 1941. The location of the photo is Eutaw, Alabama.
2. This photograph shows a house in the black housing section of Eutaw, Alabama. This house is a rural area, surrounded by a lot of dry land. A woman and her child stand on their porch as their shadows grace the porch floor, showing evidence that it is mid-afternoon.
3. In this picture I see a woman and her child standing outside the door to their house. The woman looks like she might be young, but her face is not very clear. The boy looks young and small as he sits on the porch with his hand in his mouth. When I look at this picture, the people don't really captivate me, it is the wires that catch my attention. There are so many along the houses and they stretch for miles.
4. There are several houses in the picture, all run-down. The blacks were definetley not provided with the best housing, and this picture proves it. Houses seem almost on top of each other, the area seems very crowded. Everything is close together and outlined by phone wires.
5. This picture seems heavy as it portrays people living in poverty, but also light because it is mid-day. This picture is also a negative picture because the people do not look to happy to be where they are.
6. I looked at this picture and was thankful for what I had. I am glad that I am able to live in a nice house in a nice neighborhood. Thanksgiving is only a couple days away, and this picture really makes me appreciate all I have. The people in this picture are slaves and have probably had to struggle all their lives. Being born when I was, I will never know what it is like to be a slave and I am glad that is something I will never experience.
7. subjects of photograph - 1.What do you do on the daily basis to be able to live in this house?
2.If you could change one thing to better the way you live, what would you change?
Picture #3 - Taylor B. 1. This photgraph was taken by
2. This photo is taken outside on the porch of a slave tenant's house. The picture is bright for a black and white photograph, it was possible taken in the early-afternoon. I would assume that this picture was taken in a rural area because slaves were usually housed on the farms they worked.
3. In the photo we see three people; two children and an older woman. The children seem around the age of eleven or twelve, the woman seems like she may be in her fortys. All three people are dressed poorly in raggedy clothing. The children are both wearing clothes that appear tattered and torn. The woman's clothes aren't as rageddy, but her eyes seem like there might be something wrong with them.
4. This picture takes place on the porch the slaves' home. The house looks run-down, I can tell because some boards are coming up from the floor.
5. The picture is light in color, but negative in the sense of mood. The mood is also heavy, all three people do not seem happy or look as if they have something to look forward to.
6. When I first saw this picture I was captivated by the boy's eyes. It made me wonder what he was looking at and what he was thinking about. The girl is also looking in the same direction, but I can not tell where the older woman is looking. I see that they all have no shoes, and I think to myself that their feet must hurt from long hours in the fields. As a whole, I am just curious to know what they are all thinking. They all seem to be thinking about something, I am just interested to know what they are thinking about.
7. subjects of photograph - 1.What duties do you have to fulfill today?
2.What would you rather do than work on the farm?
Picture #1 - Chris S.
1)This photograph was taken by Jack Delano in May of 1941. 2)This photograph portrays a man walking the streets in what seems to be old raggedy clothes. It takes place on Main Street in Greensboro, Alabama. The sky is clear and it seems to be a fair day. This picture definitely takes place in an urban setting, due to the large amount of nice cars, and for that time, tall buildings. 3)In this picture there are a lot of people, too many to count. They all look to be a little older, with no kids in the scene. Most of the people are African-American and are wearing raggedy clothes. None of the people really pop out at me, but the first thing I notice is the extremely large amount of cars lined up on the street. 4)As well as all the cars in this picture, there are many large buildings, more likely store than homes. They are right up against each other with no room for even an alley. These buildings are in decent shape however it is hard to tell the surroundings due to the view. 5)Although a tone of this picture doesn’t jump at you, I think that this photo is a bit on the light side. I think this because the man is walking across the street with his head held high. That of course would make this photo both positive and light. 6)I responded to this photo by being a little surprised, for more than one reason. One was because of the amount of cars, especially back then. This must be wealthy place to have that many cars together. I was also surprised because I didn’t know that Coca-Cola was so popular back then. 7)What were you aiming for in this picture? What do you think the tone would be of this picture?
Picture #2 - Chris S.
1) This picture was taken by Dorothea Lange in July of 1936.
2) It takes place outdoors in what would probably be a rural area, due to the dirt and
horse. It seems to be during the day, with an abundance of light and shadow directly
under the girl.
3) There is only one person in this picture. It seems to be a young girl because she may be wearing
some type of dress. She is African-American and for some odd reason she is barefooted, that was the
first thing to catch my eye.
4) You can only see the girl from the waste down, so you cannot see if there are any buildings
around, however if I were to guess I would think that would be just one, old building, maybe the
girls house. The house would be surrounded by the farmland.
5) The tone of this photo would definitely be heavy, negative, and dark. This girl is doing what
seems to be hard work, where she is holding something that is drawn by a horse. Worst of all she
is walking on a rough surface with nothing on her feet.
6) My response to this photograph was a lttle bit of sorrow for the poor girl. I think that
she is working extremely hard and has absolutely nothing on her feet. Plus she has to walk
behind a very smelly horse, which can't be good at all.
7) Did you mean to take this photo, since it is at a bad angle?
What did you want people to get out of this photo?
Picture #3 - Chris S.
1) This picture was take by Jack Delano in May of 1941.
2) This takes place outdoors on a porch. I seems to be the daytime on a rural farm
in the 1940s. It seems to be around five or six o'clock, when the sun starts to go
down.
3) There are three kids in the picture. Their ages seem to span from about 10 to
maybe 15 or 16. They are all African-American and have old raggedy clothes
covered in stains. None of them have a pleasant face on. This is also the first
thing to catch my eye.
4) The only building visible is their house behind them. You can't see what
surrounds it but it doesn't seem to be in the best shape.
5) This photo is easily negative, heavy, and dark. Each of the three of the
kids have frowns on their face, and they are sadly looking out to something.
6) This is a very sad photograph. I felt this way the first time I saw it, and looking
at it now, I still do. The three little kids seem to be hopeless as they look
out off their porch at something that seems to be very captivating. Something
about this picture makes sadness overcome me.
7) Why did you decide to take this picture, with the children all sad?
How do you feel about the child's expressions in this picture?

2.If you could change one thing to better the way you live, what would you change?
Picture #3 - Taylor B.

2.What would you rather do than work on the farm?
Picture #1 - Chris S.
1) This photograph was taken by Jack Delano in May of 1941.
2) This photograph portrays a man walking the streets in what seems to be old raggedy clothes. It takes place on Main Street
in Greensboro, Alabama. The sky is clear and it seems to be a fair day. This picture definitely takes place in an urban setting,
due to the large amount of nice cars, and for that time, tall buildings.
3) In this picture there are a lot of people, too many to count. They all look to be a little older, with no kids in the scene. Most
of the people are African-American and are wearing raggedy clothes. None of the people really pop out at me, but the first
thing I notice is the extremely large amount of cars lined up on the street.
4) As well as all the cars in this picture, there are many large buildings, more likely store than homes. They are right up
against each other with no room for even an alley. These buildings are in decent shape however it is hard to tell the
surroundings due to the view.
5) Although a tone of this picture doesn’t jump at you, I think that this photo is a bit on the light side. I think this because the
man is walking across the street with his head held high. That of course would make this photo both positive and light.
6) I responded to this photo by being a little surprised, for more than one reason. One was because of the amount of cars,
especially back then. This must be wealthy place to have that many cars together. I was also surprised because I didn’t
know that Coca-Cola was so popular back then.
7) What were you aiming for in this picture?
